The Niwot LTER field technician supports the field operations leader with activities involving long-term monitoring at the Niwot Ridge Long-term Ecological Research Program. Field duties include: climate, snow and water sampling, maintenance of research infrastructure including remote environmental sensor instrumentation, tower arrays, and radio communications. Additional activities include submitting water samples for processing to the Arikaree Environmental Laboratory, and initial data entry and level 1 QA/QC for climate, snow and water data. Soil, vegetation, and lake monitoring and sampling may also be required. The position requires the ability to program data loggers, scripting (or the ability to learn) in R and/or Matlab. The Niwot LTER field technician may be expected to assist in leading and training additional seasonal, part-time, student or intern field technicians. Basic maintenance of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs), snowmobiles and snowcats is also required. Winter months involve weekly field work requiring travel over long distances by snowmobile or skis to remote locations in adverse conditions (whiteouts, extreme cold, high winds). The right candidate will not only tolerate such an arduous work environment, they will thrive in it.
