Every spring, 200 eighth graders from Southern Hills Middle School pull up in buses outside the INSTAAR buildings. For the next four hours they play science games, race oranges in Boulder Creek, watch liquids fluoresce under black light, and pass around chunks of sediment or ice cores. The fast-paced activities expose students to research areas and methods pursued at INSTAAR and the NSIDC.
The Open House and collaboration with Southern Hills Middle School is an INSTAAR tradition entering its third decade. Many people at INSTAAR and NSIDC help organize and run the Open House, including graduate students and research assistants who act as tour guides, conduct demonstrations and hands-on activities, and make presentations.
