Flying to Boulder

Fly to Denver International Airport (DIA), which is about 50 miles southeast of Boulder. DIA has car rental offices, bus and shuttle services, cabs, and restaurants. The following are transportation options from the airport to Boulder:

SuperShuttle Boulder: (303) 227-0000. The Super Shuttle Boulder, a shuttle bus service, leaves DIA every hour on the hour from 8 am until 11 pm arriving at Boulder hotels/motels in about 70 minutes. The one-way trip fare to hotels is about $19. You can be taken to any address in town for about $25. Reservations are not necessary. The last shuttle leaves DIA at 11 p.m. (The shuttle counter is on the baggage-claim level of main terminal, near car-rental counters; check in at the counter to purchase ticket).

RTD Bus Service: (303) 299-6000. A regional bus service, the RTD, provides transportation between DIA and Boulder (Route "AB"). Buses leave DIA every hour or so depending on the time of day. The buses run from DIA between 6:20 a.m. and 11:20 p.m. Trip time is about 90 minutes, with a final stop at the Boulder bus station. The one-way fare is about $8. For route times, click "AB" and Westbound at the RTD schedule site. (RTD counter on baggage-claim level of main terminal for information).

Taxis/Cab: Because of the long distance to Boulder, cab service is expensive. The fixed rate is about $65 one-way.

Rental Car: Rental Companies. The car rental offices close in mid-evening (9:00pm??), so make reservations or arrangements if you're coming in later. Follow below driving directions to Boulder. (The car rental counters are on the baggage-claim level of main terminals).

Driving to Boulder

map of route from Denver airport to Boulder

Denver Int'l Airport to Boulder:
Driving time between DIA and Boulder is approximately 60 to 90 minutes.

Upon leaving the terminal or the rental car area, look for signs marked "Airport Exit" and "To I-70 & I-225 via Peņa Blvd." It is not necessary to take the E-470 Tollway to or from I-70, since it doesn't save time and costs extra.

Stay on Peņa Blvd until it merges with I-70 westbound. Stay in the left or center lanes to avoid exiting onto I-225 and other cross streets, and continue westbound on I-70 for about 4 miles.

Watch for the I-270 exit on the right, labeled "Westminster/Ft. Collins," that comes at about 14 miles from DIA. It is also labeled Exit 279, "US-36 Boulder." Take I-270 past Quebec, Vasquez, and York Streets, and past I-76 at 18 miles from DIA.

Stay in the left lanes, until you pass under a "US-36 West/Boulder" sign at about 20 miles from DIA. (Do not exit to the right, towards Ft. Collins or Broadway.)

Stay on US-36 into Boulder.

Broker Inn. Stay on US-36 into Boulder, past the Foothills Parkway/Table Mesa/South Boulder Rd exit, and take the Baseline Rd exit to the right, at about 39 miles from DIA. Stay to the right on the exit ramp, and turn right (east) on Baseline Rd. Travel to the first stoplight, on 30th Street. Get in the right turn lane and follow 30th street south for less than a block. The Broker Inn is on your right (west) directly across the street from the CU Williams Village (see lower right corner of above map).

INSTAAR. Get in the left turn lane and follow 30th street north through two stoplights until reaching INSTAAR on your right (east) just before Arapahoe Ave. The below map shows Research Buildings RL-1 (71) and RL-3 (73). RL-3 is also called the "ARC" building. Public parking after 5:00 is available in the lots adjacent to these buildings. Public parking during the day is available directly west across 30th Street in Scott Carpenter Park.

Other Boulder locations. US 36 becomes 28th Street; numbered streets run north-south with low numbers to the west (toward the mountains). Campus is to the left at the first light on US 36 in Boulder; to get downtown go left at the second light on US 36 (Arapahoe), the third light (Canyon), or the fifth light (Pearl). Hotels listed as on 28th St are on an access road just east of US 36 as you get into Boulder.

Driving to Boulder from other locations:
Boulder is on US 36 about 30 miles north west of Denver. Interstate highways I70 and I25 intersect in Denver, but there are a couple of local short cuts.

  • From the south, take I25 to US 36 west to Boulder.
  • From the east, exit I70 onto I25 north and then take US 36 to Boulder.
  • From the north, take I25 to Highway 52 west (right turn, go about 10 miles); it dead ends into Highway 119 at the local IBM plant, turn left and take 119 into Boulder.
  • From the west, take US6 exit (left exit) off I70 just past Idaho Springs about 15 miles through Clear Creek Canyon, turn left at the traffic light at Highway 93 and continue about 15 miles into Boulder.

Transport within Boulder

Buses
Boulder has a Community Transit Network (CTN) of buses that run frequently along several loops as well as the regional bus system, called RTD. Particularly useful are the frequent CTN buses called the HOP (circles town), SKIP (Broadway), JUMP (Arapahoe), LEAP (Pearl), and BOUND (30th St). BOUND runs north and south on 30th Street approximately every 30 minutes. Those staying at the Broker Inn can board the BOUND at the intersection of 30th Street and Baseline (a short distance from the Inn) and get off near or at Arapahoe Avenue (a short distance to INSTAAR). The HOP runs in a loop connecting the Pearl Street Mall, the Crossroads Mall, and campus. HOP buses go every 7-20 minutes, depending on time of day; day and evening routes differ slightly. CTN bus fares are on the order of 75 cents.
Call call 303-299-6000 for more CTN route information or check the CTN Map page or a CTN PDF file with bus frequencies and map.

Cabs
Boulder has several cab companies including Yellow Transportation, which is associated with the SuperShuttle service between the airport and Boulder. Phone: 303.227.0000. Facsimile: 303.443.9309

Creek Path
The 16-mile long Boulder Creek bike path is great east-west route for walking, roller blading, bicycling, etc. It can be accessed about 1 block south of INSTAAR. To the west, it roughly parallels Arapahoe Ave, lying a few blocks south of it until Broadway and then about a block north of Arapahoe. Heading west from INSTAAR, it travels beside campus, to downtown and up into the mountains. Heading east from INSTAAR, it travels several miles over flat ground.

Koenig
The Friday dinner (6 -10 pm) will be at the Koenig Alumni House (location shown on detailed map below and overview map above).
Broker Inn guests: A shuttle van will travel between the Broker Inn and Koenig several times during the early evening and several times during the late evening
(Shuttle schedule will be added to this website later). Those staying at the Broker Inn can also take public transportation, including CTN buses. From the Broker, you can either walk to Baseline to Broadway (a ~10 minute walk) or take the BOUND bus. From Baseline and Broadway, you can take the SKIP bus north on Broadway until the intersection of University.
Parking: The lot adjacent to Koenig is free but quite small. Additional metered parking is available east of Broadway on University Avenue and is free after 5:00 pm. Metered space may be limited, depending on other events on Campus.
