Check-In
Tuesday evening or Wednesday morning
Check in during the Icebreaker on Tuesday evening (5 - 8 pm) at INSTAAR in building RL-1 rm 269 or at the start of the Workshop on Wednesday morning (8 - 8:30 am) in building RL-3 rm 620. NSTAAR is located at 1560 30th Street, Boulder CO 80303 (see Maps). You will receive a packet including a printed Program and Astracts volume, and other materials. Extra abstract volumes can be purchased for $30.
Please load presentations onto our computer or put up your poster as early as possible during the Tues evening Icebreaker or Wed morning check-in. We would like posters to stay up as long as possible during the workshop. Thanks.
Badge required
Our security situation is more strict than previous workshops and the badge you received at check-in will be required for entrance to all events (talks, dinner, etc). Moreover, when entering and exiting the RL-3 building for the talks, you must use the main entrance along Marine Street (north side). Take the elevator or use the central stairwell only. Our apologies for the hassles.
Program Summary
Please note that this schedule starts and ends a day of the week earlier than past workshops. And we have two poster sessions instead of one.

MINI-COURSE: WORKING WITH THE NEWS MEDIA Organizers: Axford, Yarrow; Reed, Sasha; Rosner, Hillary; Townsend, Alan; Yulsman, Tom This one-hour and 15 minute course will provide tips and tools for working successfully with the news media. Scientists are increasingly expected to communicate our results to the public, and journalists often act as intermediaries. Media coverage of science has many potential rewards – for individual scientists, for our profession, and for society. Yet some of us are hesitant to talk with journalists because we worry about being misrepresented or misunderstood. Fortunately, by understanding what journalists are looking for – and spending a little time preparing for interviews – we can help make news coverage both accurate and evocative. Two Boulder journalists will provide advice: Tom Yulsman, a science and environmental journalist, is associate professor of journalism at the University of Colorado and co-director of CU’s Center for Environmental Journalism. Hillary Rosner is a freelance science and environmental journalist. She writes for diverse publications including the New York Times and Popular Science, and contributed to Al Gore’s book “An Inconvenient Truth.” |

End of Meeting. Thanks for coming! |
See you in 2009 at Bates College, Maine…
Themes
The workshop is multidisciplinary and open to anyone interested in Arctic environments: past, present, and future
Previous Arctic Workshops have included talks and posters on Arctic and Antarctic climate, archeology, sociology, environmental geochemistry, geomorphology, hydrology, glaciology, soils, ecology, oceanography, and Quaternary history.
The workshop is organized around themes developed from the abstracts
The Arctic Workshop has no pre-set agenda; the program is based on the abstracts received. This allows for great flexibility and enables us to focus on very current research. It also gives a lot of power to attendees to control the Workshop foci. To bring a topic to the fore, they just need to convince several colleagues to attend and talk about related topics. Although the workshop is ever evolving, you can get a sense of past programs for 2007, 2006, and 2004.
Special session on science, communication, & politics?
Several people have expressed interest in a special session of talks on "the intersection of science, public communication and politics in the global warming debate", which would cover Arctic-specific issues as well as global ones. Whether we have this session or a more general one (ie human dimensions) is dependent on reaching a critical number of submissions. This is a great opportunity for interactions between physical scientists, social scientists, media creators, and others. Please let your colleagues - of all disciplines - know about it. Thanks.
Program Availability
Because there is ~ 3 week interval between submittal of abstracts and the start of the workshop, we can only post a basic program shortly before the start of the workshop.
PAGES Meeting on Saturday
Location: NCAR Auditorium, 9 am; shuttle leaves Best Western Boulder Inn at 8:15 am
A one-day long meeting of the PAGES Working Group "Arctic Climate during the Last 2 Millennia" will follow the Arctic Workshop on Saturday 8 March. All paleoclimate scientists working in the Arctic with high-resolution data and/ or modeling are invited to contribute to this first Working Group meeting. Its main focus is to begin reconstructing environments of the the last 2000 years for a new PAGES focus on “Regional climates and modes of variability”.
This planning meeting will not include science talks, so you are strongly encouraged to submit contributions on the Last 2ka to the Arctic Workshop.
PAGES will provide one night of free lodging at the Best Western Boulder Inn but you must make the reservation yourself (limit=40).
If you are planning to attend the the Arctic Workshop and the PAGES meeting, please mark the PAGES checkbox when you register for the Arctic Workshop. If you are only going to the PAGES meeting, please email anne.jennings@colorado.edu - do not register for the Arctic Workshop.
Local Organizer: anne.jennings@colorado.edu
Please note that the main meeting organizer, Nalan Koc will be out of email contact for most of February (nalan.koc@npolar.no).
