CAPE 2000: Sea Ice in the Climate System The Record of the North Atlantic Arctic June 2-6, 2000 Kirkjubaejarklaustur, Iceland

Sponsored by:

RANNIS The Icelandic Science Foundation
IGBP-PAGES Core Project Office
PARCS (Paleoenvironmental Arctic Sciences)
NSF-Earth System History Program Office

To all CAPE 2000 participants:

We have had a strong expression of interest from a diverse spectrum of colleagues interested in the role of sea ice in the climate system, at present and in the past. The meeting will provide an exciting forum for an exchange of ideas related to sea ice, its impact on climate, and its reconstruction in the past. In addition, ICAPP, the Arctic Ice Coring Community, will participate in the CAPE meeting and hold a companion meeting at the same time/locale.

We have tried to organize the meeting to take advantage of the spectacular natural surroundings at Kirkjubaejarklaustur. A long afternoon break is scheduled for most days so that participants can see the local environment at the peak of the day, and return invigorated for subsequent sessions. In exchange, we have scheduled sessions well into the evening. But of course it is light very late this time of year in Iceland, so it will not feel that unusual to be listening to speakers or contributing to roundtable discussions at 9 PM.

What we need from you:

  1. If you have not already done so, please fill in the registration forms on the CAPE website (http://www.ngdc.noaa.gov/paleo/cape/cape.html).
  2. Please be sure to submit your abstract electronically by May 1. Abstracts should be submitted to the Local Organizing Committee (age@rhi.hi.is). Not more than two pages of text and a figure or two, please.
  3. All participants are asked to send their names and flight schedules to Camilla Tvingmark (camilla@icelandtravel.is). She can arrange accommodation for you in Reykjavik if needed, both before and after the meeting.
  4. Please indicate if you plan to participate in the post-meeting excursion. Details are below.

Some practical points:

  • Make your plane reservations soon. Prices are presently very attractive, but they are expected to rise markedly in the near future. Tickets to Iceland are the responsibility of each participant. Arrival details are on the following page.
  • The first week of June is early summer in Iceland. Although the meeting is close to the summer solstice and days will be long, expect cool temperatures, and as always be prepared for some moisture. Since we have scheduled a mid-conference boat trip on an ice-dammed lake, as well as opportunities for local hikes, please bring sturdy, warm shoes, light jackets, and light-duty rain gear. Dress for the meeting will be casual.
  • We expect to have adequate funding to cover all participant support costs from your arrival in Iceland through the meeting (except alcohol), although it may be necessary to collect a modest registration fee. We expect to cover the cost of accommodation in shared rooms. Anyone requiring a private room should let Aslaug know as soon as possible (age@rhi.hi.is), and be willing to cover the additional USD$172 for the four nights at Kirkjubaejarklaustur.
  • If you have additional questions or comments on the proposed schedule, please pass them on to Giff (gmiller@colorado.edu) or Aslaug (age@rhi.hi.is).
We look forward to seeing everyone in Iceland in June.
