How are cities and states responding to the sea level rise predictions by INSTAAR and other scientists? What are their options? What are the roadblocks? What tools are they using to analyze the risks?
This overview will provide an update on last year's talk on how cities and states are responding to sea level rise, particularly Miami and New York. Subjects covered will include not only what the cities and states are planning to do, including the recent bold “Big U” project in Manhattan, but other issues we might not think of when we talk about response planning:
- The politics of climate change and how it is impacting planning.
- Insurance issues and how they are making matters worse.
- Recent changes in the National Flood Insurance Program.
- Legal issues related to sea level rise.
