We are grieved by the loss of Parker Emerson Calkin, glacial geologist and long-time INSTAAR Affiliate, who passed away June 10, 2017.
Parker specialized in glacial geology, Quaternary geology, and geomorphology. He did his PhD research in the Wright Valley, Antarctica. Calkin Glacier in Victoria Land was named for him after he made investigations in the area in the early 1960s. He published significant work on the glacial history of Alaska, Antarctica, Pacific Northwest, and Great Lakes while on the faculty at SUNY Buffalo. After retiring he moved to Boulder and spent quite a bit of time at INSTAAR, where we remember him as soft-spoken, curious, and kind. His most recent work was on the Holocene glaciation of the Gulf of Alaska using tree-ring analysis.
Parker had been battling Alzheimer's the past few years but still ran a half marathon last year.
