Bibliographies and article databases

Antarctic Invertebrates - With 19 million specimens, the U.S. Antarctic Program collection at the National Museum of Natural History (NMNH) is the most valuable tool we have for the study of Antarctic and subantarctic marine invertebrates. The collection includes type and non-type material dating back to the U.S. Exploring Expedition of 1838-1842. Web content includes images, literature references, maps, and other data about specimens represented in the NMNH collections.

Antarctic Treaty Documents - find the Recommendations, Measures, Decisions, and Resolutions of the Arctic Treaty Committee Meetings from the first meeting in 1961 to the present. After clicking the link above, choose "Documentation Centre " from the menu on the left side of the page. You can also search the Handbook of the Antarctic Treaty System and summaries of decisions in the Antarctic Treaty Searchable Database, 6th edition.

Arctic & Antarctic Regions - now available from any on-site INSTAAR computer! This bibliography indexes a million journal articles on cold regions. Many of the articles are available in the INSTAAR collection or in other nearby libraries. A useful feature is the index to publications at NISC/WDC-A for Glaciology in RL-2.

ACM Digital Library - full text of all Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) articles, focusing on computing research and information technology.

Academic Search Premier - general collection of journal articles and citations from Ebsco includes thousands of full-text papers on INSTAAR subjects.

Algology, Mycology and Protozoology Abstracts
- reproduction, growth, life cycles, biochemistry, and genetics. Click on the "Algology Mycology and Protozoology Abstracts" link to enter.

Access Science: The Online Encyclopedia of Science and Technology - useful for looking up scientific terms that are new to you or for explaining terms to lay audiences.

American Chemical Society publications - includes articles from 30 journals and magazines, research material and supporting information published only on the Web, and buyer's guides for chemicals and supplies.

Annual Review of Anthropology - search or browse through the last ten years of this synthesis of anthropology literature.

Anthropology Plus
- multilingual index of journal articles, reports, edited works, and commentaries from all core and many local and lesser-known sources from the late 19th century. Click on the "Anthropology Plus" link to enter.

Arctic Health - covering aspects of the arctic environment and the health of Northern peoples, this portal includes a library database of hard-to-find publications, government reports, gray literature, and non-print media; in many cases references link to full-text versions of the documents.

Bibliography of Native North Americans - collection of references to books, journal articles, conference papers, and government reports from the sixteenth century to the present. The bibliography covers all groups from the North American continent and some groups from Greenland and eastern Siberia. Click on the link to the database, then search.

Biological Sciences and Living Resources - topics include marine life and aquaculture, algology, ecology, entomology, environmental biotechnology, and genetics. Click on the "Biological Sciences and Living Resources" link to enter.

Biological Abstracts, Biological Subfiles, and Biology Digest - search 20 of CSA's specialized biology databases at once.

BioOne - innovative collection of full-text bioscience journals since 2000. This consortium is attempting to provide high-quality, low-cost access to academic publications, providing an alternative to the practices of major publishers.

Canada Depository Services Program - Canadian government documents, including reports from Natural Resources Canada, Canada's National Climate Change Process, and the Canadian Polar Commission. Most documents are freely available as PDF files from anywhere on the web; the rest are available through the INSTAAR Information Center computer.

CHEMnetBASE - a wealth of chemical information, including dictionaries of compounds and access to the full text of the famous CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics.

CiteSeer.IST - Scientific Literature Digital Library indexes full-text articles that are online, including algorithms, software, and techniques in Postscript and PDF formats. Also provides citation indexing. Focuses mainly on computer and information science.

Circumpolar Health Bibliographic Database indexes 3,600 publications on all aspects of human health in the circumpolar region, focusing strongly on Canada. A project of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Team in Circumpolar Chronic Disease Prevention.

Cold Regions Bibliography hosted by the American Geological Institute - search the Antarctic Bibliography, the Cold Regions Science and Technology Bibliography, or both together.

Cold Regions Bibliography hosted by the Library of Congress - CRREL bibliography on cold regions science and technology covering the last 40 years.

Collected Algorithms of the ACM - software and algorithms associated with the Transactions on Mathematical Software and other ACM journals, available to download.

Conference Papers Index
- indexes conference proceedings from 1982 to the present. Click on the "Conference Papers Index" link from the list of databases.

Declassified Documents Reference System - a database of online policy documents and security interest summaries show official U.S. stances toward the Arctic Ocean, Antarctica, and other regions.

Dept. of Energy Information Bridge - DOE research and development reports in chemistry, environmental science, engineering, physics, biology, information science, and materials: most documents are provided full-text.

Digital Dissertations - search the collection of ProQuest, the main archiver of theses and dissertations (2 million, from 1861 to the previous semester, from North American graduate schools and European universities). Click on the link above, then choose the "Digital Dissertations (ProQuest Dissertations and Theses - A&I)" link from the list to enter the database.

Directory of Open Access Journals - search through free, open-access, quality controlled journals. 650 of the 2200 journals indexed are searchable at the article level.

DTIC Online - Defense Technical Information Center is the largest freely-available repository for DoD and government-funded scientific, technical, engineering, and business related information available. It hosts nearly 1 million full-text reports and documents, including USGS papers.

EBSCO Host Electronic Journals Service - full-text articles from thousands of journals.

Ecology Abstracts - searchable database of 240,000 references from 1982 to the present, updated monthly.

eHRAF Collection of Archaeology - a cross-cultural database of 60,000 pages of information on prehistory, organized by archaeological traditions and subject indexed to the paragraph level. Produced by Human Relations Area Files, Inc. at Yale University, a nonprofit consortium of colleges and universities that facilitates comparative studies of human behavior, society, and culture.

eHRAF Collection of Ethnography - a cross cultural database of 350,000 pages of information on all aspects of cultural and social life. The information is organized by culture and ethnic group and subject indexed at the paragraph level.

Electronic Collections Online - full-text journal articles since 1994 collected by OCLC (Online Computer Library Center), a worldwide library cooperative, include subjects like environmental science, oceanography, geology, geography, biology, and anthropology. Click on the link above, then choose the link "ECO: Electronic Collections Online" to connect.

Encyclopedia of Earth - an electronic reference about the earth, its environments, and their links with society, written wiki-style by a community of scholars. Includes articles from published encyclopedias and other reference sources as well. More than 2000 articles are included to date.

Encyclopedia of Life - an online encyclopedia of 170,000+ plant, animal, and fungal species that aims to capture information on all 1.8 million named species on Earth within ten years. The project combines a wiki/web 2.0 approach of public contributions with expert curation by scientists. The encyclopedia works both as a field guide and a "macroscope" to discover patterns in ecology and evolution otherwise too large or complex to perceive.

Engineering Village 2 - searches the gamut of engineering documents produced from 1969 to the present, including Combined Compendex, INSPEC, and ENGnetBASE.

ENVIROnetBASE - searches through the content of 140 CRC Press books on environmental science.

FDSys - official U.S. government documents website, from the Government Printing Office.

General Science Abstracts
- collection of articles since 1993 in atmospheric science, biology, earth science, environment, and other topics. Many citations link to full text. This database has excellent support such as tutorials, database descriptions, and a thesaurus to help you search with precision.

Geologic Guidebooks of North America Database - free access from the AGI to this index to mostly geologic field trip guidebooks from 1940-1988. (Some citations are from earlier and later years.) Guidebooks since 2002 have been added to GeoRef.

GeoRef - the American Geological Institute's geoscience database containing over 2.2 million records of North America since 1785, and other areas of the world since 1933. For an accurate search, for Pete's sake use their thesaurus. It will save you a lot of floundering.

GeoScienceWorld - a collection of geoscience articles from several earth science societies and institutes, including the American Geological Institute and Geological Society of America. The publishers will gradually add maps and data to the full-text journal articles now available.

GIS Bibliography - references to most key geographic information systems literature, spanning 1970 to the present.

Government Information Online - a virtual reference service that answers your questions about government documents and information sources via live chat. The librarians who tend to the service are all government documents librarians from official depository libraries; if they can't find it, it doesn't exist.

Grants.gov - a portal for information on federal agencies that manage grant funds. Use it to find and apply for grants.

GreenFILE - indexes all aspects of human impact on the environment, including global warming, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling, and more. Provides indexing and abstracts for more than 384,000 records, as well as open access full text for more than 4,700 articles. To get there, click on the link above, then choose the "GreenFILE" link from the list.

IEEE Xplore electronic library - full-text access to all Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers published materials.

informaworld - full-text collection of the stable of journals from Taylor & Francis and Routledge publishing companies.

Ingenta - 18 million articles from 29,220 publications. Of those, 6,100 journals are full-text online.

Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Database - search citations from the Deep Sea Drilling Project, Ocean Drilling Program, and Integrated Ocean Drilling Program Research, 1969-present. For data and full-text publications, see the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program web site.

International Polar Year 2007-2008: Resources in Polar Research in the NOAA Central Library Network: A Selected Bibliography - materials in the NOAA library system that support IPY topics are listed in this extensive bibliography, including rare and historic materials, digital videos, CD-ROMs, online cruise data, and Web resources as well as print and digital materials.

Inuvialuit Settlement Region Database - a subset of the Arctic Institute of North America's Arctic Science and Technology Information System (ASTIS), this bibliography covers all subjects and includes land and marine areas of the ISR. Grey literature is included.

IPY Publications Database - a wonderful collaborative project to record all International Polar Year-related publications. About 3000 publications are listed so far, of which 1,300 are from the fourth (2007-08) IPY.

ISI Highly Cited - identifies the most-cited 250 scientists in each of 21 subjects. Provides biographical information on each as well as complete lists of publications and citation webs.

ISI Journal Citation Reports - Wondering where to submit your paper? Check the impact factors of the journals in your field.

JSTOR - Looking for older articles? JSTOR is a nonprofit organization that has digitized the complete runs of 360 journals so far.

National Technical Reports Library - the federal government's central source for government reports on government-sponsored research. The NTIS library is now reached through Engineering Village. To access it, click on the link above then make sure the box for NTIS is checked.

Native Health Databases - citations and abstracts on the health and health care of American Indians, Alaska Natives, and Canadian First Nations. Coverage is from 1652 to the present.

National Archives - Access to Archival Databases - the U.S. government's main repository has made digital searching of records relatively simple with a revamped global database search. If it's a government document you want, try here.

Northern Contaminants Program - search for NCP publications on contaminants in traditionally harvested foods and aboriginal food use.

Northern Research Portal - resources from the University of Saskatchewan Archives and Library for the study of northern Canada and the circumpolar world. Materials for teachers (interpretive exhibits, etc.), general readers, and advanced researchers draw from photographs, unpublished materials, and maps. Detailed finders guides for archival collections and pointers to online bibliographies by subject and geographic area are unique features of this well-organized site.

Nunavik Bibliography - growing coverage of all aspects of Nunavik and adjoining marine areas, by a partnership of the Inuit of Nunavik, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, the Canadian Circumpolar Institute, and the Arctic Institute of North America.

Nunavut Environmental Database - subset of the Arctic Institute of North America's ASTIS database; includes 19,000 records of publications and project reports concerning Nunavut.

Paleobiology Database - a public resource for the global scientific community, which provides global, collection-based occurrence and taxonomic data for marine and terrestrial animals and plants of any geological age, as well as web-based software for statistical analysis of the data.

Plant Science - indexes 250 journals from 1994 on in all aspects of plant science. Click on the link above, then choose the "Plant Science" link to access the database.

PolarInfo - references to articles from newspapers, conference proceedings, magazines, newsletters, and journals since 1996 on northern subjects, including native peoples, arctic health, education, business, policy, geology, vegetation, and wildlife. A great source for following the progress of debates in the local press in arctic Canada.

Polar Pictures - The photo archive of the Scott Polar Research Institute, digitized and searchable. Scott Polar has the most extensive polar image collection in the world.

Prospector - Need a book or journal CU doesn't have? See if you can find it nearby through this unified catalog of sixteen Colorado and Wyoming libraries, including the Colorado School of Mines, Denver Public Library, and University of Denver.

Radju: The Sami Research and Project Database - from the Arctic Centre, Finland, a collection of links to more than 200 reports about the Sami people and their environment, encompassing a good deal of data and grey literature otherwise very difficult to track down. Topics include climate change, marine ecology, alpine ecosystems, indigenous environmental knowledge, and atmospheric transport of contaminants.

RealClimate blog - a climate science commentary site that provides a quick response and missing context to developing media stories.

Science Direct - Elsevier Science portal for the full-text journals they publish. Contents include 6.5 million articles and 60 million abstracts from 1800 journals, and Elsevier has digitized their complete back file of each journal - which means you can see back to vol. 1 no. 1 online.

Scirus - an excellent search engine that retrieves only scientific information. Use it to find researchers' and project web pages, data sets, pre-prints, reports, and other web-based information.

SPRILIB Antarctica - comprehensive bibliography on Antarctica and the Southern Ocean, with records for materials from 1602 through two years ago. 43,000 records at the moment.

SPRILIB Ice and Snow - Comprehensive bibliography on all aspects of ice and snow worldwide, listing 40,000 items ranging from 1661 through two years ago.

SPRILIB Russian North - 25,000 records on northern Russia and Siberia, for materials from 1671 through two years ago.

SpringerLink - access to Springer-Verlag's stable of earth and environmental science journals, including the Kluwer family of journals that Springer recently bought out.

State Geology Bibliographies Online - search the publications of the state geological surveys of Illinois, Kansas, Maine, North Dakota, South Dakota, and Washington.

Summit County Citizens Voice - independent reporting on environmental issues. Newspaper w/substantive web content.

U.S. Geological Survey - the newly revamped Publications Warehouse puts an index of everything they've published, and access to full text for most of it, at your fingertips.

Web of Science - The largest scientific bibliography in the world. You can also use it to research scholarly influence through chains of citations and citation counts.

Wiley Interscience - 1000 journals, reference works, and online books, all full-text, from Wiley publishing company.

WorldCat - Looking for an obscure report or thesis? This database is a kind of union catalog for most major libraries worldwide. Denver, D.C., Los Angeles, Frankfurt, they're all in here. See if a needed resource is held locally or within the U.S., available through interlibrary loan.

Yukon Biodiversity Database - descriptions of 4200 publications and research projects, including grey literature, about the biology of the Yukon and Beaufort Sea. The range of the database includes all aspects of all living things except humans, environmental impacts of human activities, and non-human paleontology. Coverage of research projects is based on information from Yukon-Canada Scientists and Explorers Act licenses since 1982.
