Geology, remote sensing, oceanography, hydrology, and geographic information systems (GIS).

I am a geologist, remote sensing scientist, and hydrologist. While pursing my PhD, I have utilized field monitoring, remote sensing, computer programming, GIS, and modeling to understand how the Greenland Ice Sheet impacts the rivers that drain it and the coastal ocean. To do this have developed new techniques to monitor river water and sediment dynamics from space. I also am experienced in extended field campaigns to ground truth imagery and field instrumentation. I have conducted fieldwork in northern and south-central Alaska, Greenland, the eastern Pacific Ocean, Washington, and Colorado.

To list a few projects:

  • I have utilized airborne LiDAR and aerial photography to study braided rivers in West Greenland and Alaska
  • tasked NASA’s hyperspectral satellite EO-1 (Hyperion) to investigate constituents of the coastal ocean.
  • used MODIS to monitor the Wrangell and St. Elias Mountain Range glaciers.

I am a skilled programmer using Python integrated with ArcGIS and open source solutions such as GDAL, QGIS, and Matplotlib. I also use Matlab and JavaScript. My current research involves daily development and testing of automated image processing code.

My interest in water issues extends before my time at INSTAAR. After earning my undergraduate degree at Brown University in Geological Sciences I spent three years working in the Environmental Enforcement Section of the Department of Justice ( primarily on Clean Water Act enforcement cases.
