INSTAAR News Story See also: INSTAAR Science Spotlights CU Boulder News Center CU-Boulder News Center Dec. 26, 2002 TWO CU-BOULDER FACULTY ELECTED AAAS FELLOWS IN 2002 Two University of Colorado at Boulder faculty have been elected Fellows of the prestigious American Association for the Advancement of Science for 2002. Professor Michael Breed of CU-Boulder's environmental, population and organismic biology department was cited for his pioneering research on nest-mate recognition mechanisms in social insects that have illuminated the understanding of kin selection as a potential force in evolution. Also elected an AAAS Fellow was Senior Researcher John Behrendt of CU-Boulder's Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research. He was cited for his distinguished contributions to the understanding of crustal controls in the Antarctic Sea Ice and for efforts to protect and manage Antarctica for the scientific benefit of all nations. The AAAS in 2002 added 291 fellows, elected nationally by their peers, according to the association. The individuals were selected for their efforts to advance science or foster applications that are deemed scientifically or socially distinguished. The new AAAS Fellows will be presented with an official certificate and a pin on Saturday, Feb. 15, at the Fellows Forum being held during the 2003 AAAS annual meeting in Denver.
