Thanks to Andrew Johnson, Metadata Librarian in CU Libraries, for conducting a workshop at INSTAAR, "Data management 101: Tips and tools for successful data management." Participants from NSIDC and Biofrontiers were also invited.
Andrew polled participants about their current data management practices and plans. He then shared some new tools available to CU researchers for writing data management plans (DMPTool) and for storing large data sets (PetaLibrary); and discussed best practices for creating metadata, storing and backing up data, and sharing data.
You can download Andrew's slides as a PDF document. While the discussion ranged fairly freely, the slides include links to all the tools and services mentioned. Please contact Andrew with more involved questions—he is very helpful talking with individuals or groups.
This workshop was the second in what will be a continuing series of library skills workshops hosted at INSTAAR. Next month Rebecca Kuglitsch will lead a workshop on Web of Science and Google Scholar.
