Global CO2O18 Data Set Now Available

Measurements of oxygen 18 ratios in atmospheric CO2 are important measurements that link the atmosphere, biosphere and hydrosphere. However, quality measurements of co2o18 are difficult due to issues with co2 equilibrating with water vapor trapped in the sample flasks or problems with mass spectrometry on wet samples. Consequently, our ability to measure co2o18 has never been better than +/- 0.03 to 0.05 per mill. Also, there are known problems in our global data set that have resulted from these difficulties, manifesting in often more negative values at sites where humidity is higher, typically at low (<30 deg) latitude sites. Consequently we have not released new co2o18 data since 1997.

This new data release includes values from the global flask network through December 2005 that have been flagged where we think there the analyses may be compromised. The absolute value of the data set have also been adjusted to correct for what has been determined to be a 0.82 offset from other laboratories, and standards.
