My primary research area is the application of isotopic systems to atmospheric chemistry, climate change, and glaciology. The current emphasis in the UW stable isotope laboratory is the development of high-resolution ice-core climate records covering the last two millennia, and the use of nitrogen and oxygen isotopes to improve understanding of air-to-snow transfer processes and atmospheric photochemistry. I have also worked extensively with cosmogenic isotopes, both in ice cores, as tracers of solar variability and accumulation-rate indicators, and in rocks and sediments to elucidate Quaternary chronologies and geomorphic processes. I am also using ice cores to track changes in the deposition of anthropogenic organic contaminants in polar and alpine regions.
