The ICP-MS lab is located in INSTAAR's building RL1 and is entered from room 181. It is overseen by Prof. Tom Marchitto and managed by Professional Research Assistant Patrick Cappa. The facilities consist of a Class 1000 clean room and an instrument room housing a Thermo Finnigan Element2 sector field inductively-coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) with CETAC Aridus II desolvating nebulizer and ASX-100 autosampler. The two main rooms are separated by a small gowning room. Our main work is focused on measuring trace metal concentrations in calcium carbonate, particularly the shells of foraminifera, to reconstruct past climate.
We can run small CaCO3 samples (down to a few micrograms CaCO3 after cleaning) for outside users. Routine analysis for foraminifera includes Mg/Ca, Sr/Ca, Cd/Ca, Zn/Ca, Li/Ca, B/Ca, U/Ca, Mn/Ca, Al/Ca, and Fe/Ca. Samples can either be sent pre-cleaned or they can be cleaned here at additional cost. Our routine cleaning includes both reductive (hydrazine) and oxidative (peroxide) steps, but oxidation-only cleaning is an option. Additional elements and other sample types are also possible. Please contact Tom Marchitto for pricing information.
