Masters student opportunity in paleoceanography

Tom Marchitto is seeking a talented and motivated student to complete a Masters degree at the University of Colorado, Boulder, in the field of paleoceanography, beginning in the Fall of 2012. The research project, funded by the National Science Foundation, is entitled "Investigation of a Dynamical Response of the Tropical Pacific to Orbital and Solar Forcing during the Holocene". It is a follow-up and further exploration of ideas presented in Marchitto et al., 2010, wherein we postulated that centennial/millennial-scale oscillations in solar output lead to variations in the state of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO). The position includes two years of academic-year and summer financial support. During the first academic year the successful candidate will serve as a Teaching Assistant for an introductory-level course in the Department of Geological Sciences. The student will have an academic home in that department, and a research home in the Institute of Arctic and Alpine Research. Applicants will be evaluated on their research interests, college transcript, GRE scores, recommendation letters, and potentially a telephone or in-person interview. Candidates should apply through the Department of Geological Sciences before January 10, 2012.
