Meltwater Lakes on the Greenland Ice Sheet

Graduate student Tyler Jones spent a total of ten weeks on the Greenland ice sheet during the 2011 and 2012 field seasons, where he worked on almost all aspects of the NEEM deep ice coring project as a field assistant.

He took these photos of meltwater lakes on the top of the ice sheet from a transport plane during the unusually warm summer of 2012. An increasing number of meltwater lakes are being seen on Greenland, which has been losing roughly 200 million tons of ice annually since 2003.
