Applicants may be (1) students or professionals in the geosciences who wish to further their software/data skills in computational linguistics, or (2) computational linguists with an interest in geoscience applications. Applicants may apply to the hackathon as individuals or in groups of up to three. Building a team and applying as a group is strongly encouraged! Applicants may also apply as individuals and then form a small group at the outset of the hackathon if desired. Regardless of group preferences, each applicant must submit a separate application. Only the project proposal and link to dataset may be duplicated between applications.

1. Statement of interest (max. 2 pages, single-spaced) with the following information:
• Applicant name, educational background, research interests or professional direction. If a student, please include expected thesis topic and the degree sought (1 paragraph)
• A description of your reasons for wanting to attend the ClearEarth Hackathon - i.e., what you expect to gain, and what you hope to contribute (1 paragraph)
• Proposal for a project to work on, that uses natural language processing (NLP) and/or machine learning (ML), semantics, annotation, information extraction, visualizations to advance semantics tools in earth science research (~1 page)
• Please reference any software or dataset that will be utilized in the project


2. Letter of support - for university students only
   • If you are currently enrolled as a degree-seeking graduate student, please include a letter from your advisor indicating his or her support of your attendance at this event. Note that no financial contribution is required from the advisor or your university.

Applications will be reviewed by a panel of PIs and applicants will be notified of a decision by Sept. 1st, 2016.
